Cover story: The magical rooftops of New York

by  MINA KANEKO and FRANCOISE MOULY, The New Yorker, May 12, 2014

“I painted a future that’s completely achievable,” Eric Drooker says of this week’s cover, “A Bright Future.” “All the technology for it already exists,” he adds. “What’s lacking is the political power to make it happen. In New York especially, the city has so much potential. When you fly overhead, you see that New York’s mostly a sea of flat, empty rooftops, with the streets in between as small alleys.”

“That was one of the things I loved best about being a kid in New York, spending time on rooftops. No one ever used them, which was amazing to me. You’d think that people would hang out there and grow gardens. You have these amazing views, and you have the whole city to yourself; it’s a magical place.”

The experience of going to the movies should be magical and romantic. Too often, in this age of cookie-cutter multiplexes, abundant price gouging and poor projection, it’s anything but that.

Enter Rooftop Films, the annual summer festival devoted to showing interesting independent films in spots atop and within city structures, on nights that often include live music and after parties.

“It’s about an experience,” says Desiree Akhavan, whose film “Appropriate Behavior” screens at the festival in July. “Right now we’re consuming films in a really different way, on the Internet and on our Apple TVs but very rarely are we going to the theaters.

“With independent films, there are only a couple theaters that you traditionally go to. But when you’re out of your element and you have an evening based around a movie, which includes live music and drinks, it’s a completely different experience.”

The Brooks Guesthouse in Bristol has recently installed Rocket caravan rooftop hotels in their hotel package, and in just under a month, the retro hotels have been a flying success.

Late last month, (27 April), a boutique hotel in Bristol, the Brooks Guesthouse was approached by the British aluminium caravan owners Retro Rockets, who proposed the idea of quirky hotel caravans on the roof of the hotel.

The installation process of the caravans was quite a sight, as the silver caravans had to be hoisted up by a crane into place. Being the first ever rooftop caravan hotel in Europe, Brooks Guesthouse’s ‘Rooftop Rockets’ hotel option has become the latest major Bristol attraction.

CaravanTimes got talking to Carla Brooks, co-owner of the boutique Brooks Guesthouse to see just how good the rooftop caravan hotels have been doing.

Carla said: “They have been booked out every night that they have been open since the 2 May and we have good bookings for the future but we still have availability.”

Taking it to the top: New rooftops bars in NYC

by CHRISSY RUTHERFORD, Harper’s Bazaar, May 9, 2014

There’s nothing like hitting a rooftop bar on a warm summer evening for post-work cocktails. We’ve rounded up 4 of the new and newly revamped rooftops to take in the view this season.

1) The Skylark
For midtown revelers, enjoy your libations with a gorgeous view of the Empire State building and downtown Manhattan.

2) The Roof, Viceroy New York
This upscale rooftop bar has a picturesque view of Central Park, the perfect setting for a sunset Instagram. Look out for cool DJs providing the soundtrack for your Friday and Saturday nights.

3) Top of the Standard, High Line
While this rooftop isn’t new it did just get a serious makeover during the Fall of 2013—so this year if you’re lucky enough to make it to the top, you’ll enjoy the Havana-nights decor, as well as the resident chef Soa Davies’s fine Japanese BBQ from Robataya Grill.

4) The Jane Hotel
Maybe the most exclusive rooftop to hit for a drink this summer— the Jane’s rooftop is finally open to the public, but by appointment only.

Urban farms in Taipei and Tokyo improve office life

Walking out onto the roof of Winkler Partners Law Firm, arugula and strawberry plants frame the silhouette of buildings and mountain tops that make up the Taipei skyline. “Here’s my business card. That side is how I make money, the other is how I spend money,” says Robin Winkler, an American expat and our host for the day. The card states Winkler Partners Law Firm and the flip side reads Wild at Heart Legal Defense Association. His hobby, Wild at Heart, is the first environmental legal defense fund in Taipei, but his day job isn’t too bad either. The Winkler Partners office houses one of the first rooftop gardens in Taipei.

Robin shows us three rainwater tanks that are used to water plants during droughts. In Taiwan, precipitation varies dramatically and rainwater tanks are essential to help with both flooding and dry spells. The rooftop also has a compost toilet, which surprisingly has no smell. The matter is stored in tubs that will eventually be used to feed their plants.

There are passionfruit trees, strawberries plants, leafy greens, and about forty other edible plants and 300 other species that find a home on the law firm’s rooftop garden. Employees are encouraged to help out with the garden. Robin and his colleagues wanted a space to share information about plants and to make the office a place where you could take a break from… well, the office. It’s their alternative to the common workplace culture and a symbol for jobs with dignity. Ideas for a greener Taiwan extend further than their urban oasis, with intentions to share horticulture with the community through composting workshops and youth education programs.
